Looking like a true survivor, feeling like a little kid

[Im still standing]

The above photo was taken last week — just like mommy these days, he'll do almost anything to figure out how to get in the kitchen! It was Photoshop edited and color-tinted.

The last month has been a blur of holiday madness, cross-country travel, and celebration with family and friends. But in the midst of it all somehow our baby boy, and the days are getting less and less in which I can officially call him that, managed to hit several new milestones.

At the beginning of December he had just started pulling into a sitting position from lying down. Now, he can pull to a standing position just about anywhere. He's not happy unless he's up and at 'em. He can sit up unassisted now whether lying down on his back or tummy. And then he's on his knees. And he quickly rises to his feet. In just the last few days, patiently standing and holding onto something has turned to gingerly figuring out how to make those tootsies and legs work together. He can walk along any surface he has a good hold of — and still tries on the ones he doesn't. We had him out at an indoor playground yesterday afternoon and he let go to take a couple of steps on his own after watching dozens of other toddlers whiz right by him, but quickly thought the better of it and grabbed back onto my leg for dear life. I give it any day now, however. Every day I think we're finally baby-proofed and find out just how much we're not.

He's had his first interstate car trip and did quite fabulously. Better than we could have even hoped or expected. Apparently he's got his mother's wanderlust gene, which hopefully will kick in for his first plane ride in the next month. And just this week, toofies #7 and #8 have started to make their appearance. My fingers and toes fear a full set of chompers up front!

If something makes noise or lights up, he's guaranteed to be there in a flash. Our living room is more like a carnival atmosphere after Christmas. What one grandmother didn't clear out of Toys 'R' Us, the other followed with down the aisles of Target... Our favorite is a "learning ball" that coos "Baby's sooooo big!" in full -star voice when a button is pressed. His daddy and uncle had quite the time with that one on Christmas morning, and think it should come in very handy during the peer pressure days of high school.

This mini-birthday is somewhat bittersweet for me because ... it's the last monthly countdown / recap I'll ever be able to do for him. I only have two more photos to add to this frame. He's out of fingers in which to count the months of his life now. Next month is the big one-year mark, and after that the milestones pretty much go in increments of six months rather than 31 days. He's just growing so fast and my little baby is becoming a little boy in front of my very eyes. I wish I could just freeze time for a bit and hold him close and never forget just how small he really is right now — even though when standing next to his cousin last month who's a full five months older, he was over two-inches taller.

Every day I'm given the privilege of being my son's mother is the best day of my life. Even the teething ones. It's been a year I'll never forget and I thank God for picking us to share it with him.

Each year since we got engaged back in 1995, we add our holiday pics to this page. Obviously certain photographs will now be passworded, however, so go here for more information on viewing all of them.
