Go shawty - it's your birthday!

[my buh buh buh birthday]

Our son enjoying his first birthday cake last Saturday in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Even though the cake and ice cream have long-since been digested, I still can't believe it's been a year since we welcomed our son — our first child — into our family!

Last week we flew home to Oklahoma (which went amazingly well considering it was our son's very first plane trip) to share the big event with family and friends. I was in a near-panic by Friday. First my mom, the party host, got sick. And then our party guests started canceling on us one-by-one. My mom ended up being ok after 2 days off work and was green-lighted on Thursday by her doctor (just 2 days before the party) to be around me and the baby so we didn't have to switch party locales. But on Thursday night, one of our friend's babies got strep and a 104-fever. Then another friend's baby came down with bronchitis — and yet another friend had to cancel and later found out her baby had a double ear infection and a cold. Then a best friend from high school, who had planned to meet our son for the very first time, had her car break down and she couldn't make it in from Dallas at all. So we were minus 8 guests total — and 3 of the 4 babies our son's age couldn't attend.

And of course we were terrified the whole time we were back between the plane rides, and what seemed like everyone in Oklahoma and Texas turning up sick with something, that we all would end up sick as well. But so far...knock on wood...

Never fear though. The Oklahoma sunshine broke out on Saturday with temps in the 60s, and we had a full house of party guests raring to go nonetheless!

After opening more presents than I was even aware Toys 'R' Us had in stock, the wee one dug into his very own birthday cake (with a little help getting started from his Uncle Brian), and even my mom's poor poodle wasn't immune to the chocolaty swath of destruction.

After a feast of Elmo birthday cake and burgers, everyone then headed outside for rides on the 3-wheeler, and the birthday boy's daddy and Uncle Brian auditioned for America's Funniest Home Videos.

We also made the "big announcement" regarding our second son's name last week.

His middle name is after Todd's dad, hence all the hush-hush secrecy. Son number one handed Grandpa the official printed announcement when we arrived at their house last Wednesday night. I'm so glad we got it on video, because it was a really special moment for all of us.

And now, we all attempt to recover, unpack, and avoid the many airborne illnesses we were exposed to last week... Thanks so much to everyone who sent birthday wishes!
