The above photo was taken on January 30th. It made it as high as page 6 of Flickr Interestingness for that date. And then, like any good photographer, I ate the props.
This morning I was watching analysis of the 2006 crop of Super Bowl ads on Today. The experts agreed in unison that this year was (quote) "a bust". Seriously, has there really been a good year for Super Bowl ads since the first year of the dot-com boom? We could pretty much save the time and energy of the experts and just go ahead and chalk it up in the negative column the day before the big game... There are always a few cute ads here and there. But you'll find that ratio just about every sweeps month and awards show anyway, without the 1.5 million per milisecond pricetag.
Two campaigns that really bothered me this year:
1. Diet Pepsi (and not just because I wouldn't touch the stuff if it was the last aspartame-infused product on the market) is "brown and bubbly" HONESTLY the best slogan your ad agency could come up with? Seriously? Let's see...it's either toxic sludge or a byproduct of your septic tank overflowing. Either way - not good. Why not just go ahead and say, "Diet Pepsi - brain cancer link still not proven since 1963!"
2. Pizza Hut's "Cheesy Bites" Jessica Simpson. Strike one. Slogan? "One of these days these bites are gonna pop..." Immediately think of pimples here. Pizza face. Bubble-zits. Greasy pepperoni. White goo popping out. Ummm, ewww. No thank you, strike two. Hello, Papa John's!
Dishonorable mention goes out to Burger King for the Whopperettes. The king is creepy enough in his own right. But now I'll think of "human mayo" every time I see one of your sammiches. And that's...just...wrong.
Somehow we managed to plan a mini-Disney vacation during the only two days of bad weather in Florida since 2006 began. Even so, the party still went on! Check out Flickr for photos if you are so inclined.
I can't believe I have a two year old now. How did that happen?
Well at least with two weeks of Olympic coverage coming up, there should be no lack of topics to snark on... Ciao!
